Sim card on top

OK, so I missed last week’s blog but you were probably better off as I’d backed Spain to win the world cup of golf and they got run down by Sweden (and my old mate Robert Karlsson) and I backed Robert Allenby to win the Aussie Masters but he was gunned down by Rod Pampling and Marcus Fraser.
So, with no further ado, who will win this week’s Australian PGA at Coolum.
I’ve got a clear divide on this event –the top guns like Geoff Ogilvy Peter Lonard, Pampling, Allenby, Stuart Appleby and Richard Green are the favourites, no doubt about that. They’ve all performed well there in the past, especially Lonard, and are the crème of the Australian golf talent. But it’s easy to name one of them the winner
Just below them are the Aussie battlers on the PGA Tour – Mathew Goggin, Nathan Green, John Senden, Greg Chalmers, Andre Stolz and former winner Brett Rumford.
And then there are the young guns like Michael Sim, Marc Leishman, Matthew Millar, Aron Price and Kiwi Tim Wilkinson.
But every now and then this tournament throws up a young gun giving him a breakthrough win and that’s the way I’m going.
My two favourite picks are up and coming Aussies Michael Sim and Marc Leishman.
Sim was on the PGA Tour in 2007 but had limited play due to a back injury and was on a medical exemption this year. He has talent written all over him but last week his nerves got the better of him in the final round at Huntingdale.
He can atone and Leishman, who rattled home for a top-10 finish at Huntingdale can be in the mix. He earned his PGA Tour card by finishing 19th on the Nationwide money list and has a great record on the Australia domestic circuit, the Von Nida Tour.
For a third pick, I’m going to look just outside that big guns I named and have a look at Nathan Green. He was highly placed at Coolum last year and was in the mix at Huntingdale without getting his game into top gear, especially his putting.
And if I was going to pick on the faves for a top-four, don’t discard Lonard. His form is OK and he goes super well here.
