Poor old Ollie

Belated blog last week as it was hard to get excited about the Singapore Open after the drama of last week and Sergio Garcia’s playoff win over poor old Oliver Wilson.
After a great tipping week a fortnight ago, last week wasn’t so flash so the less said the better. But let’s just dwell on Sergio’s win for a moment – or more the fact that Oliver Wilson has finished runner-up in five tournaments this year.
Sergio his showing more and more grit lately and the win in China was a good reprise of his playoff win in the Player’s Championship earlier in the year. I think he might have good 2009.
There’s nothing on either the PGA or European Tour this week and the only event going on is the Singapore Open. It’s a rich event and has drawn a great field with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Adam Scott in action and all coming off a solid tournament in China.
Adam Scott has a great record at the venue having won twice before there but he’s still on the comeback trail from injury and has never beaten a field here as good as this one. I quite like Els and Mickelson but there’s value for money in someone like Simon Dyson, who likes playing in Asia, and South African Charl Schwartzel, who has been in good nick lately.
Now one thing I like to do every year is identify players who I think will get their debut win in the year ahead. Here’s some to keep an eye on in 2009:
Kevin Streelman. A good tough player with the kind of game suited to tough courses;
Ken Duke. Has had two years getting closer and closer to a win and the breakthrough is not far away
Steve Marino: A guy who can go low in a blink of an eye but is prone to inconsistency – if he can get that steadiness into his game he can win a handful.
As for the European Tour, I'm ging all Oliver: OLiver Wilson and Oliver Fisher as two sharp players who will definitely win something soon
