Overton overdue

Apologies for no blog last week – I had a family bereavement that took my focus away from golf. But we’re back now and looking to pick you a winner or two this week … lately we’ve been close to the money but a batch of top-5s and top-10s don’t cut it, especially measured against some of the tipping I had done earlier in the year.
One thing I will say is that there have been of players I’ve predicted you watch out for during the course of the year and two that spring to mind are Robert Karlsson and Camilo Villegas, who both burst into form in the last part of the season with two wins apiece.
Another guy I’ve been regularly tipping without getting any results from is Bo Van Pelt, but I’m going to give him another chance to prove he’s got game by making him one of my three picks for Justin Timberlake’s on the PGA Tour. Van Pelt is a good reliable player who has yet to hold it together when in contention. He was fifth at this tournament last year and has been steady if not brilliant these past few weeks.
He’s my third pick and I’ve got two guys singled out ahead of him. One of them is Tim Herron. Now that John Daly is basically a sideshow attraction, “Lumpy” is every thinking fat man’s favourite golfer … and with two top-10s in his past three starts and a top-15 at this tournament last year, I think he’s close to a breakthrough. Herron doesn’t win more than once every couple of years and I figure he’s just about due.
But my top pick is Jeff Overton. He was 10th two starts back at Turning Stone after fading from the lead and last week in Texas was a rock-steady fifth. He was top-20 here last year and is definitely in better form than a year ago.
OK, I’ve mentioned Robert Karlsson once and I’ll talk about him again – as a top hope for the Portugal Masters on the European Tour. Last year he and Steve Webster streeted the field before Karlsson faded over the concluding stages to finish second on a course that coughs up plenty birdies. Karlsson at his best right now and is looking for three straight wins and I can’t see why he can’t them.
A guy who is not that well known but has been battling along in reasonable nick is Karlsson’s fellow Swede Alexander Noren. He’s been delivering consistent top-20 results over the past six weeks or so and he could be good value.
But my top pick is Mr Consistency in Europe right now, Ross Fisher. The Englishman’s record is phenomenal. Over the past five weeks he’s been 20th, 10th, 3rd, 7th and 2nd … if anyone is overdue a win, it’s him.
