The great Dane

November 3rd 2008 23:50
Well what a weekend to celebrate -- you wouldn't have found too many people tipping you Soren Kjeldsen to win the Volvo Masters at Valderama, but that's exactl;y what golfdelerium did.

Kjeldsen's first win in five years had been in the offing after some good form in preceding weeks which has been the result of a reworked swing and a pretty hot putting stroke.

Kjledsen, though he's a Dane, models his putting on the German great Bernhard Langer, who is one of the eagle-eyed best with the flatstick.

Kjeldsen took a three shot lead into the final round and always had a margin of safety which he needed after a couple of late bogeys but he held tough to the end for a win over Anthony Wall, who I'd tipped a couple of weeks ago!

It was almost a big double for the blog after Ken Duke finished in a tie for second at the Ginn Sur Mer Classic in Florida. Duke finished one shot shy of Ryan Palmer who was a deserving winner after he made a clutch birdie at the last hole.

It was a sweet justice for Palmer who had earlier called a penalty on himself when his ball moved as he addressed a birdie putt on the 10th hole. It takes guts to call a penalty like that when you're the only one who sees it and Palmer deaserves credit for his honesty.

It's one of the great things about golf - that it's self-regulating and it's great to see someone manage a win after playing so much in the spirit of the game.

OK, this week is the last big event on the PGA Tour, the Disney tournament.

There's one guy here who I've tipped before and who I'll back again: Jeff Overton. The last time I tipped him he went pertty lousy but he had an excuse - a week later he underwent an operation to remove his appendix! He played last week, which was probably too soon, and excelled and I'm expecting him to perform again as a he needs a good result to retain his card for next year.

I quite like Vaughan Taylor as well. A couple of years ago, this guy was on the road to being a very good player but seems to gone adrift in the past year or so. But he showed signs two weeks ago that a good tournament wasn't too far away and he franked that by getting into contention in the final round last week before finishing in a tie for second.

For my third pick I'm going to stick with Chris DiMarco. He had a shocking third round at Florida but otherwise played three solid rounds and has now played three strong tournaments in a row - he can cap a great comeback year this week.

The European Tour moves to China this week for the HSBC Championship which draws a multicultural field.

Plenty of you will know I’ve been tipping Ross Fisher to capitalize on a good form run but he hit the wall last week after five top-10s in a row. I’m in two minds as to whether to stick with him or not as he was second in this tournament last year … but I fear he might have played too much golf lately.

Leaving him aside, the money is on the Ks – if you can count Paul Casey as a `K’. The others are Anthony Kim and Martin Kaymer.

Kim would love to win in Asia and is in good form after playing well on a recent trip to New Zealand for a made-for-TV event.

Kaymer briefly challenged for last week’s Volvo Masters before pushing a bit too hard but the young German is top-class and is due another win.

And Casey is in a good patch of form with a couple of recent top-10s and a good record in this tournament
