The Fisher King

October 30th 2008 04:38
Whoa, a bit late with this week’s blog – been too busy celebrating Sergio’s walk in the park win last week.

I said Sergio was all but a certainty and he won as such, distancing the field on a course he grew up on.

My tips in the US weren’t so hot with Tim Herron all over the place, jamming a couple of 65s between his 71s – one day soon he’s going to tie it all together. Mark Hensby was in contention early in the tournament but dropped his bundle. As for the winner, Cameron Beckman, truth is I wouldn’t have picked him in a 100 years …

On to this week, where it’s The Volvo Masters at Valderama in Spain. There are some guys who perform well year after year at this testing course including Garcia and Padraig Harrington and they have to rank among the favourites.

But I’m going for value in the ultra-consistent Ross Fisher. Look at his last five starts: 10th, 3rd, 7th, 2nd, 3rd. He’s got to win one soon! And watch out for him in the majors next year, this could be England's next big thing and he coudl achieve what Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have so far failed to do: win a big one.

I also like Simon Dyson. The pale Englishman has been slipping back into form and has done well on this course in the past. I’m not sure he can hold his nerve in a tough tournament but he’s getting close to the winner’s circle.

My final tip is Dane Soren Kjeldsen. I’ve tipped this guy before and he was in the hint behind Sergio last week as well as finishing top-four here last year. He can be erratic but I’m willing to gamble on him.

In the US, it’s a wide open field at the Ginn Sur Mer Classic. The guy I really like is Chris Di Marco. He’s absolute quality but he’s on the road back from injury. He’s been in the money the past two starts with a top-20 and top-10. I just wonder if he’s ready to thread together four good rounds but I won’t risk him.

Last week I tipped out Eric Axley who never really recovered from a shocking start at a low-scoring tournament and did really well to even make the cut. I’m giving him a second chance.

And I’m giving a fourth or fifth chance to big Ken Duke. Regular readers of this blog will know I’ve tipped him a lot and while he’s always there or thereabouts he can’t quite nail it. Maybe this time.

The other contender could be Kiwi Tim Wilkinson who played so well in Texas a couple of weeks back while Chris Stroud is rookie in form who could surprise.
