twilight zone

Well here are in golf’s twilight zone, with no PGA events and the European Tour going through its Asian swing. It’s the end of a long year yet it’s also the start of the 2009 European Tour season … players are tired but they want to get a jump on their colleagues when it comes to earning cash.
That’s because the European Tour is running it’s version of the PGA’s FedEx Cup; called the Race to Dubai, in which the top players on the money-list get to play for a hideous amount of money in Dubai about one year hence.
And that’s why you’ve seen Phil Mickelson at European Tour events; Phil’s signed up as a member of the European Tour because seen how much there is and he wants a chunk of – he figures, quite rightly, that because Tiger Woods won’t be playing on the European Tour, he (Phil) stands a good chance of striking it rich in Dubai …
While Phil isn’t teeing it up in Hong Kong this week, the first full field event of the European season, expect to see more of him in Europe’s flagship events.
Hong Kong has drawn a pretty good field, headed by defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez.
I can’t see Big Mig defending his title as there’s plenty of talent in good form.
I’d tip Michael Campbell because his form line is good, but I worry that he’s had a month off and may need the outing. If he doesn’t win here, I think he can win either the Aussie Masters or the Aussie Open in coming weeks.
The guys I will go for are in form:
England’s Simon Dyson, who was in contention to win in Singapore before fading in the final round, likes Asia and has a solid record in this event.
Rory McIlroy was rock solid in Singapore and I think the Northern Irish rising star will appreciate the birdie-making opportunities available.
Sweden’s Daniel Chopra is coming back to some of his best form and was seventh here last year.
A roughie might Anthony Wall, although like Cambo, the Englishman hasn’t played for a while.
