Oh Canada

Just a quick update ahead of the Canadian Open.
A lot of the talk here is that those who did well at the British Open should be among the favourites – particularly Jim Furyk, who is looking for his third Canadian Open title.
His top-5 finish at Royal Birkdale suggests he’s in charge of his game but I worry about the mental toll that Open performance might have taken from him, or Anthony Kim, another who did well at Birkdale.
Those tough conditions can really wear you down and I’m not certain either Furyk or Kim can back up.
Instead I’m going outside the top guys.
Kevin Streelman is a good young American player in some decent form and I like him at decent odds of around 100-1.
Ryan Palmer is coming off some good form at the US Bank tournament and has done well at Glen Abbey in the past.
Ken Duke has been in a rich vein of form with a series of top-10s in recent weeks and he’s a guy who deserves a breakthrough win.
Steve Marino is another who has been knocking at the door for a while – he’s a real birdie maker and if he can eliminate some errors from his game he can win.
And I really hope Bill Haas can break through the glass ceiling that’s holding him back. The son of Jay Haas has got real talent but has been frustrated with not being able to lift himself above 20-something finishes.
My top five are: Streelman, Palmer, Duke, Marino and Haas.
The Russian Open is a wide open affair because the field isn’t strong and I like three guys: Englishmen Benn Barham and David Drysdale and Ireland’s Gary Murphy, a rotund but combative player.
