who to cheer for

Out of China and back to my living room post-Olympics and just in time to preview the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, the second leg of the FedEx Cup finals.
All the big dogs came to the top last week in the Barclays and I don’t expect it to be much different this week with last week’s winner and two-time champion here Vijay Singh, last year’s winner Phil Mickelson and in-form Sergio Garcia the big three.
But you won’t get much return on an investment in those three so let’s look wider for an upset.
I’ll start with tubby Ken Duke. He’s only twice been out of top 20 in his past eight starts and was 12th last week and not far off the big guys. He has game but whether he has the x-factor to turn it into a win remains the unknown.
Chad Campbell is an all or nothing player so I’m not too worried about closing 76 last week. He will either be in the top half dozen or out the back door, so maybe wait to see if he makes a good start.
Regular readers of this blog will know the name Kevin Streelman by now, he’s been on my target list for some time and has got class written all over him. He didn’t quite handle the heat last week but is learning with every outing
Ben Curtis is a really good chance because he has been so damn consistent of late. He was seventh at British Open second at PGA championship and fourth last week – all top drawer efforts in hot fields. We know he can play and now he’s showing it.
Mike Weir was fifth in the Canadian Open and seventh Barclays, reaffirming his long-awaited return to the top is finally starting to eventuate.
So, don’t ignore the big three but have a look at Streelman, Curtis, Weir, Duke and Campbell. And I particularly like Curtis. The former British Open champion has his game at major level again and won't go away.
As they say in Boston: Cheers!
