Adam Bomb
April 28th 2008 19:16
[SIZE=2]Well, Adam Scott got the cash (see previous post) but not before he threatened to do a Greg Norman and blow his cnances.
Scott went into the last day of the Byron Nelson Championship with a three shot lead but paid that back in quick time with a bogey start and double midway through the front nine as he fell behind Ryan Moore, the stockyformer American amateur champ.
But the sweet swinging Aussie clawed his way back but still needed a birdie on the last to get in a playoff. He did that by nailing a tough, breaking putt from 10 feet.
Scott had chances to take the playoff on the first two holes but nerves seemed to attack his putting stroke which was flaccid and unconvincing on successive birdie opportunities.
The whacky thing is that when Scott got into trouble on the third playoff hole (in a bunker and then barely on the green) he did an anti-Norman by holing a miracle putt from 50 feet to claim another title in a career that could soon cement him as the genuine world No 2 behind Tiger.
Scott wasn't the only one turning in some heroics over the weekend with the loveable Ulsterman Darren Clarke holing a long birdie putt at the last hole in the European Tour event in Shanghai for his first win in five years and his first since his wife Heather died of breast cancer in 2006.
The cigar-chugging Clarke, who is trying to bring up two boys on his own, hadn't won since 2003 and most of his time in the intervening period has been spent dealing with Heather's illness, her eventual death and then the grieving process.
To see him back as a champion is heart-warming.
Check back later in the week for tips for this week's tournaments where we'll try to make it two from two after the Adam bomb in Dallas got us home.
